NYC Mayor’s Office Puts a Spotlight On Broadway

Not only do the dazzling Broadway works presented on stage fill the theatrical community with a rich history, the theaters themselves hold some amazing stories. One of my favorite Broadway-related books is Playbill’s At This Theatre, which tells the history of Broadway’s many venues. It’s a large coffee table book and a necessity for any theater geek. This is the digital age, however, so it is about time the history of Broadway gets a multimedia treatment. That’s just what the mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has done with SpotlightOnBroadway.com.

Spotlight on Broadway presents a series of videos that document the history of Broadway’s 40 theaters. It is the combined efforts of the mayor’s office and the Broadway League that these rich stories can be told in a digitally accessible manner. The site launched on September 9th with five theater stories: Al Hirschfeld, August Wilson, Booth, Majestic, and Richard Rodgers. Once this site is complete, it will become another must-have for the theatrical community.
